Eye Stye - Treatment & Remedies

Stye refers to the inflammation and infection of the eyelid. It may affect the skin of eyebrows or the eyelid, more commonly the lower eyelid.

Causes

It is usually caused by certain pusforming bacteria called the staphylococci. It is due to lack of regular cleaning and washing of the eyes. Poor health, malnutrition, conjunctivitis and infections of the eyelids can give rise to stye formation.

Signs & Symptoms

Eye stye causes pain and uneasiness. Sometimes fever may be present. Difficulty in vision is sometimes present. After 4 to 5 days the redness gives rise to pus formation and once the pus comes out, the patient is relieved of pain. Styes may be recurrent in nature.

Herbal Medicines and Home Remedies

  1. Boil 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water like an herbal tea preparation to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day.
  2. Apply warm compresses for several minutes 3 to 4 times daily.
  3. Take two full cup of water and one teaspoon of turmeric powder. Mix together well. And then apply as eye drops three times daily.
  4. Guava leaves, warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth, and then used as a compress, reduce the redness, pain and swelling. It is the one of the best home remedies for eye stye.
  5. Can be prevented with good lid hygiene.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Chandrodaya Vati is the drug of choice for external use. But it should be used under supervision.

Do's & Don'ts
  1. The patients should avoid all sour foods and drinks.
  2. Curds are specially prohibited.
  3. Reading is not advisable.
  4. Patient should not be awake till late hours at nights.
